The team isn’t quite hitting on all cylinders but certainly the trend is right. After two straight sub-90 point games (this is the first time the Monkeys have scored under 90 in consecutive games since 2001!), the Monkeys to have appeared to have straightened the ship in Week 3 with a minor 130+ point explosion against IDK division leader and rival, Buffy. Rivers is the second best quarterback in the league while the passing game finally came alive in week 3, mostly buoyed by Anquan Boldin’s 36 point outburst (8 receptions for 140+ yards and 3 TDs). Roddy White is averaging over 15 points per week while Brandon Marshall is showing weekly signs of improvement .
The big question for the Monkeys is the running game – an unlikely problem for a running powerhouse franchise. Jamaal Charles has been lightning in a bottle but continues to see shared touches with Thomas Jones. Ryan Mathews has been largely ineffective and was knocked out of the last 1.5 games with an ankle injury. Pierre Thomas was serviceable in his substitute start but the Monkeys will need to see more stable production from their run game if they are to make a deep run this year.
Monkey’s GM, Evan, was still concerned despite his team’s week 3 win over Buffy. “We’re doing better – no question. However, Ryan’s injury may linger and JC’s inconsistent touches have got me a bit worried. With all the moves we made this off season, we knew that this would be a transition season. However, if we can get our ground game going – I feel very good about our playoff prospects. We’ll see in a few weeks.”
