Super Bowl XVI

What did we say last week? "Eric will have to rely on some witchcraft for that once in a decade upset…” Well, it happened, and it looks like our fourth three-time champion will be Fat Jubas! We gave the Tiiite End Jammers the edge at nearly every position but come game time, everyone not named Andrew Luck, LeVeon Bell, and Antonio Brown came up short for Jammers. In fact, while Sunday and Monday represented hope for Lei, this matchup was almost over by Sunday as Fat Jubas jumped out to a huge lead on Saturday night.

Playoff MVP David Johnson had another 100+ combined yards game, and threw up 31.6 points. The quarterback juggling that ended up starting Jameis Winston was a great move by Eric. And that big game Jubas needed from slumping receiver Mike Evans? Got it! Having another receiver step up to help him? Hello Alshon Jeffery's 11.7 points! And with LeGarrette Blount pounding his way to 17 pts himself, Jubas were looking great early on.

The Jammers did make a game of it though. Any time you have Bell and Brown yet to play, any lead can be overcome. And the two Steelers did combine for 47.8 points to close the gap, but a dud by Demaryius Thomas and negative five points from Titans defense really hurt. In the end, the golden trio of Luck, Bell and Brown -- plus Matt Bryant’s 17 pts -- weren’t enough to complete a comeback win for Jammers.

How did Jubas get here? Well, to be honest, they’ve always been here. Like we said last week, this was their third back-to-back title showing, and they already had two rings (2005, 2012) in their trophy room. Jubas missed the playoffs just once in recent years (starting off 1-8 in 2014), and the last decade has seen them go as far as the division finals seven out of ten times, plus four straight division titles from 2010-2013 (and an additional one this year), and four Super Bowl appearances. Are they the best team from Spunky Misunderstood Geniuses division? That’s a definite “yes.” Are they one of the best franchises in CTDB history? Again, that answer must now be answered in the affirmative.

In the 2012 title game, the hero for Jubas was Cam Newton, who subsequently became a keeper for the next two seasons. And then, starting in 2015, GM Eric decided to ditch keep-ing a quarterback and opted to stream options. Meanwhile, his entire roster has changed from then, as Chris Johnson, Darren McFadden, Vincent Jackson, and Jimmy Graham gave way to the current crop of Jubas’ champs.

The biggest pickup of all was sophomore running back David Johnson -- undrafted as a rookie -- who has emerged as the greatest fantasy weapon of all. And while there’s been ups and downs for the likes of CJ Anderson, Alshon Jeffery, and Emmanuel Sanders over the last few years, each has served their time with Jubas, with Jeffery and Sanders completing their third season before finally getting a long awaited ring.

This year, Jubas started off 5-0 before suffering a 2-4 midseason swoon, but they picked it back up for a 4-1 record to clean up the division title and earned a crucial bye. Then we had the 0.4 point win over Battle Angel to get into the Super Bowl. And then, amidst all the doubters, Jubas came through and finished the job, and got their much deserved third title! Congrats to Eric on his third ring!

As for the Jammers, this Super Bowl collapse was a disappointment but a second finals showing in three years definitely signals that the franchise is back as an every season contender. After going to our first three Toilet Bowls (2010-12), the Jammers have worked themselves up over the past few seasons, culminating in one of the most dominant seasons ever, in 2014. Coming up just short this year is still a win for a team that dropped out of the playoffs last year.

Overall, all this success signals a return to glory for Jammers, and their fantastic keeper core will keep them in title contention for years to come. GM Lei has shown a deft touch on the waiver wire, and this season unearthed Jordan Howard, Tyreek Hill, and Taylor Gabriel, among others. With Luck, Bell, Brown, plus DeMarco Murray and Demaryius Thomas on-board, this is still the most talented team in CTDB and Jammers won’t likely fall prey to the championship curse they suffered last season.

Super Preview 2016

My goodness, in what has to be the closest divisional finals ever, Fat Jubas narrowly edged out Battle Angel by 0.4 points, 84.7 - 84.3! Once upon a time we had a tie in the Super Bowl, but that was before decimal scoring came into our league, and for hyperbole’s sake let’s just say that this was the narrowest CTDB playoff victory ever! With Jammers dismissing Chunky Monkeys by a comfortable margin, the Super Bowl matchup is set, as our two #1 seeds prepare to face off for a shot at their third titles each! Let’s take a look at the matchups…

QB: Here’s to sudden waiver wire starts! Bills QB Tyrod Taylor was inserted into the lineup after being picked up off of the waiver wire right before the big game — Taylor was on this team earlier this month too, but was dumped in favor of Matthew Stafford. And that decision basically won Fat Jubas the game -- Stafford put up only 13 points, free agent two day pickup Winston had 17 (he was cut for Taylor), and Taylor threw down 19.6, a crucial difference in the tight game versus Battle Angel. Great GM move Eric, and now he'll return to the Super Bowl again.

And now Taylor is gone again, with Jameis Winston returning to the roster for the championship game. Again, this just shows how shuffling quarterbacks is a viable option in our league — Jubas has used five quarterbacks this year. Winston will face off against Lei's Andrew Luck, who has been steadily putting up 25+ points each game. EDGE: Jammers

RB: You can’t find a better backfield than LeVeon Bell and DeMarco Murray, and that combo led Jammers to their last title. But David Johnson and LeGarrette Blount aren’t slouches either. And even if Bell goes supernova, so too could Johnson, as they are neck-and-neck the best running backs in football. Both are facing off against tough defenses, so no edge there. But secondary back Murray seems to have more upside than touchdown king Blount, and so we’re going to just wait and see which pairing can combine for a bigger weekend. (I want to mention that Jordan Howard, one of the semi-breakout backs of this year, can’t even get on the field for Lei’s squad…) EDGE: Jammers

WR/TE: Aside from having a drool worthy backfield, Jammers also have Antonio Brown, the best receiver in the game. My goodness! For this Super Bowl Xmas matchup, it’ll be Brown, Demaryius Thomas, and whoever becomes the third receiver here. Last week it was Jordan Matthews, but we have a suspicion Kenny Britt, Tyreek Hill, Taylor Gabriel, or even Jeremy Maclin might get the call for their big play ability.

Unfortunately, Jubas is coming into this matchup with their number one receiver, Mike Evans, in quite a slump. The good news is Tampa Bay will play New Orleans this week, so a return to big numbers could happen for Evans. It needs to happen actually, for Jubas to have a chance. And maybe Eric could slide Alshon Jeffery into the hero slot, as Jeffery is back on the field and had a great last week. Otherwise Eric'll be juggling between Emmanuel Sanders, Tyrell Williams, and JJ Nelson for starting receivers. None look like difference changers. EDGE: Jammers

DEF/K: Matt Bryant and Matt Prater are both top kickers, working for high scoring offenses. Bryant has been the #1 kicker for most of the year, giving Jammers yet another top position option, but there’s really no big difference between Bryant and Prater. And both defenses are pretty fantasy boring. Chargers and Titans, for Jubas and Jammers respectively, are both okay but neither will top more than five or six points this weekend. EDGE: None

Prediction: There’s no way not to predict a Jammers win, as they’ve been the highest scoring team all year long (117.2 to 109.3 for Jubas), the most consistent team week-by-week, and also seem to be playing their best ball at just the right time. Fat Jubas did beat Jammers in their lone matchup this year, but that was in WK2, pre-Bell. For Jubas to win this time out, Eric will have to rely on some witchcraft for that once in a decade upset. Fun fact: Jubas has made three back-to-back Super Bowl appearances (2005-6, 2011-12, 2015-6), and each time it's been a win and a loss, so that portends well for their matchup this weekend. Still, we are going with Jammers by twelve points...

Toilet Bowl VII

#2 Dirty Birds (5-8) def #4 Fobsters (3-10), 103.4 - 75.5
That's two Toilet Bowl wins in three years for Dirty Birds -- with a championship in-between. It can be argued that Jon has been the winningest owner in CTDB ever! Ha, just kidding. It's been a tough year for Dirty Birds, as they crashed hard out of the playoffs, but this win redeems their season. And hey, even Adrian Peterson returned to the field this past weekend!

Led by 30.4 points by LeSean McCoy and 26.2 points from Matt Ryan, the Birds cruised through the two Toilet Bowl rounds with aplomb and will now seek to fill out their roster with yet another #1 overall pick -- even though 2014's Todd Gurley has really lost his shine. Could a return to title contention be around the corner?

As for Fobsters, this is their second Toilet Bowl finals in as many years, and it has to count as a victory as they were the worst team in the league this past season. An upset win over Gang Green in RD1 gave them a top two pick, and they'll have a very high pick in a loaded draft to help get them out of the cellar next season. With both Eddie Lacy and Melvin Gordon out by the end of the year, well see if GM Jimmy will select a new franchise back, or add to their receiving depth of Dez Bryant, Jordy Nelson, and promising rookie Corey Coleman.

2016 RD2 Matchups

Tiiite End Jammers (10-3) vs Chunky Monkeys (7-6)
The Malcolm Mitchell versus Julian Edelman matchup on MNF determined the fate of Inscrutable Drama Kings’ first round, and in the end, Monkeys snuck out with a close victory behind Kirk Cousins, DeSean Jackson, and Mitchell’s MNF heroics. However, having only topped 100+ in one of the last five weeks, Evan’s team seems ill equipped to fend off Jammers, who haven’t gone under the century mark since WK7, and threw up 144.7 (non-counting) points during the bye. Should Monkeys just concede now?

Fat Jubas (9-4) vs Battle Angel (7-6)
With both teams floundering in round one, Battle Angel used a 21.7 point outburst from Jeremy Hill to edge out Ping’s team, who didn’t have anyone except Caleb Sturgis, the kicker, go over double digits. Now Vu gets to face the Spunky Misunderstood Geniuses division winner, a team that averaged 109.3 ppg (to just 98.1 from Angel) this season. Battle Angel’s hopes ride on anther quiet week from Jubas' David Johnson and Mike Evans, while simultaneously hoping Drew Brees and TY Hilton are enough to fend off Matthew Stafford and Emmanuel Sanders, plus LeGarrette Blount versus Jeremy Hill. Actually, this could be quite the matchup! Can Fat Jubas make their fourth Super Bowl in six years? Or will Battle Angel make a return appearance to the big game (their last one was in 2013)?

Toilet Bowl
#2 Dirty Birds (5-8) vs #4 Fobsters (3-10)
Nothing exciting here, as Fobsters neatly dispatched top seed Athena Nike behind a huge Tom Brady game and also a Carlos Hyde and Jordy Nelson cherry on top. The Dirty Birds had home field advantage and used every inch of it to crush Gang Green 116.8 - 63.9. Last year’s champs could win a Toilet Bowl again (they won in 2014), or Fobsters could get over the hump after losing out to Buffy in the fight for the #1 overall pick last season -- they won in 2013. Either way, both of these teams have had Toilet Bowl success, and another Chinese school rivalry lives on!

Playoff Matchups 2016

Not much changed since WK6, as the playoff matchups we expected then shook out basically exactly the same! What a weird year for fantasy, and it's safe to say that there are some pretty hobbled teams fighting it out in RD1...

PLAYOFFS
LA Buffy (8-5) vs Chunky Monkeys (7-6)
Despite scoring only 97.8 ppg — the lowest in IDK division — Buffy faced the league’s softest schedule and took advantage to start 6-2 before stumbling a bit down the stretch. The good news is that they’re 2-0 this season in H2H matchups versus Monkeys, and even the loss of Rob Gronkowski won’t hurt too much, as he’s been MIA most of this season anyway. Losing AJ Green though, that’ll hurt a lot, and Cam Newton will need Matt Forte and Julian Edelman to really step up if they hope to avoid the upset this week, and to pick up their first postseason win since the 2012.

Chunky Monkeys was in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in five years, but they managed to win WK11-12, and secure their postseason spot. Self-admittedly one of the weaker Monkeys teams in recent years, Evan recently traded for Mark Ingram to shore up an empty running game — an astonishing fourteen running backs have been used this season — and Kirk Cousins has been handed the reins after Matt Stafford and Dak Prescott were around for most of the year. It’s an open question if Julio Jones and Terrelle Pryor’s big play ability will be enough for these Monkeys to hit the second round...

Battle Angel (7-6) vs Philadelphia Phreaks (6-7)
Two equal, both 3-3, teams entered WK13, working to get home field advantage for their playoff matchup. To be honest, Battle Angel’s 98.1 - 83.8 victory doesn’t mean that much, except a slight uptick in confidence I guess. Neither team has put up a century game in three weeks, so this likely won’t be an explosive affair. If Drew Brees can put up a huge game, he could win this matchup almost by himself, perhaps needing just one explosive week from either T.Y. Hilton, Jarvis Landry, Stefon Diggs, or Kelvin Benjamin. Or maybe Vu will choose to go to the ground by throwing out Jeremy Hill and Jay Ajayi together? Let's see what Angel has in store for Phreaks when the game actually counts...

Ping's Phreaks average a league low 89.9 ppg, but they’ve battled to an almost 0.500 record this season, and secured an early playoff spot to boot. While they don’t have much top end explosiveness as a team, Ping’s team does have a superstar quarterback of his own: sophomore Marcus Mariota, who has put up incredible stats since a slow first month. Mariota has been pretty much just as good as Brees this season! Also, the strong running game of Devonta Freeman and Spencer Ware could present a roadmap to victory for Phreaks. Which of these teams will get to the next round?!

BYES
Tiiite End Jammers (10-3), Fat Jubas (9-4)
Well, Lei’s team is going for two out of three titles, and had an impressive bounce back from a post-championship hangover. Leading the league in wins and points — 117.2 per game — Jammers is coming off of four straight victories and has pushed past the century mark in each of their last seven games. Led by Andrew Luck, DeMarco Murray, LeVeon Bell, and Antonio Brown, plus the best kicker in the game (Matt Bryant), Jammers is the odds-on favorite to take their third title overall!

After making the Super Bowl last year on the “strength" of a 5-8 record, Fat Jubas will look to reappear in this year's championship game with a Spunky Misunderstood Geniuses division title in tow. The class of the division with 109.3 ppg, Eric’s team is riding David Johnson, the way underrated Mike Evans, and LeGarrette Blount toward their third title chance as well. It looks like Jubas will go with Matthew Stafford into the postseason, as Carson Palmer was dumped after starting most of the year. And despite a three game losing streak W6-8, Eric’s team has picked it up in recent weeks again, finishing strong with four wins in their last five games.

TOILET BOWL
#1 Athena Nike (6-7) vs #4 Fobsters (3-10)
It’s a battle of old Chinese school foes as Frank and Jimmy face off in RD1 of the Toilet Bowl. Athena Nike was actually the third highest scoring team in the league — at 109.1 ppg -- but they couldn’t get to 0.500 and started  the season off 2-5, torpedoing their playoff fortunes. The silver lining here is that Frank could draft #1 back-to-back if they can win the Toilet Bowl this year, which would be quite the cherry on top of his rebuild. Could Leonard Fournette join Ezekiel Elliot in Nike’s backfield next season?!

Similar story for Fobsters, as they’re the second highest scoring team in SMG division, and fourth overall. Despite that, Fobsters only acquired three wins this season, after getting pounded by a league leading 112.1 PA, and starting off 0-6. Even with Tom Brady back, Fobsters managed to dump their last four games too. The good news is that Brady, Melvin Gordon, and Jordy Nelson are playing hot right now, and there’s a chance Fobsters could upset their way to a Toilet Bowl finals.

#2 Dirty Birds (5-8) vs #3 Gang Green (4-9)
Our defending champs had a horrific year, as they faced a tough schedule and a multitude of injuries, including losing Adrian Peterson for the season early on. Dirty Birds had Matt Ryan, LeSean McCoy, and Odell Beckham submit stellar numbers but that wasn’t nearly enough, as they enter the Toilet Bowl having lost three of their last four, and clearly won’t get a chance to go back-to-back. The post-championship curse remains!

Facing off against his old college roommate, Greg’s Gang Green is coming into their matchup with four losses in their last five, so it’ll be a game of serious losers. The young arm of Derek Carr throwing to old guys Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Crabtree just wasn't enough this season, especially with an erratic ground game that provided no consistent presence. A number one overall pick would be great for the perpetually starless Greenies, but it’ll be an uphill battle to earn one this year.

Mid-Season 2016: Inscrutable Drama Kings

Is it just me or are these fantasy regular seasons just getting shorter? We’re already at the halfway point, so let’s take a look at how we’re doing! [SMG Mid-Season]

Tiiite End Jammers (4-2)
Don’t look now but our 2014 champs are back on track again! After a lost 4-8-1 season last year, Jammers are leading the league in points at 113.2 ppg and basically cakewalked through their first five weeks, before a matchup against Battle Angel in WK6. Still, Lei has be excited about his prospects for two championships in three years as LeVeon Bell is back from suspension and more importantly, DeMarco Murray is back as a fantasy force!

In addition, new quarterback Andrew Luck has found a rhythm with Antonio Brown and Demaryius Thomas quickly. Most of the draft additions from this year have been glued to the bench, and for good reason, as Jammers are poised to take control of the conference without touching any of his core. Watch out for the Tiiite Ends!

LA Buffy (4-2)
Despite a draft day trade that moved away the #1 overall pick, Buffy has emerged stronger than last year. All four of their wins have been century games for them, and they had a 116.2 - 112.2 barnburner against Athena Nike in WK2. They are riding the Cam Newton and AJ Green connection, along with TE Greg Olsen, who is actually the #3 overall WR/TE, one slot above Green. Who needs Rob Gronkowski when Olsen is so good? Oh wait, Rob Gronkoski is back himself, and now Buffy is playing two monster TEs, just like the real life Patriots. The ground game is powered by old men Matt Forte and Frank Gore, and that should be plenty.

To be honest, the Ezekiel Elliot trade now looks even worse in retrospect, as Russell Wilson is only a bye week replacement, Doug Baldwin and Jordan Reed have been up-and-down, and Thomas Rawls was already cut for a defense earlier in the year. None of those additions have helped Buffy get to where they are, and they could have had Elliot leading their backfield. Hindsight right? Sure, Gronk is back, but this trade is increasingly looking like Elliot for Gronk…

Chunky Monkeys (3-3)
We predicted a backslide for Evan’s team this year and our prediction looks prescient. While 0.500 ain’t bad, three wins is all the games Monkeys lost last season. A WK6 145.5 - 92.8 win against Fat Jubas handed the Spunky Misunderstood Genius leader their first loss of the season, and maybe that portends better things for Monkeys during the second half of the season. After all, they haven’t really been bad, just missing a decent ground game. Their leading rusher is Latavius Murray, who has been out since WK4. Charles Sims? Injured reserve. Theo Riddick? Injured and cut. Jerick McKinnon? Not AP’s replacement. The only stalwart has been Giovani Bernard, and outside of a return to form by Jamaal Charles, this ground game is weak.

Luckily, the air attack is fantastic! Julio Jones is otherworldly, Marvin Jones has been the best receiver in Detroit, Randall Cobb finally is back on track, and the multi-talented Terrell Pryor is the NFL’s most exciting player. With waiver wire pickup Matt Stafford coming in at #3 in the QB rankings, Monkeys could take their early season so-so performance and go right back into contention if they can find a better running attack.

Dirty Birds (3-3)
The defending champion curse lives! The Dirty Birds took a 54.5 point crap in WK1 and things haven’t gotten much better from there as Adrian Peterson and Sammy Watkins both hit the IR, and first round pick Golden Tate was almost cut until last week’s explosive game (on the bench). While 3-3 is better than last year’s putrid start, Jon’s back-to-back title hopes will depend on finding some more bodies to put in the lineup, as injuries have ravaged this squad.

The good news is Matt Ryan is the top ranked quarterback in the game, LeSean McCoy has been the second-best running back, and Odell Beckham has rediscovered his love for the game. Plus there’s the top ranked Vikings defense, which is averaging 15.0 ppg, five full points above the next closest team. If some receivers can be found to add to this team, Dirty Birds could return to the playoffs, although it’ll be a struggle. Also, the not-so-secret secret is out: Todd Gurley sucks!

Athena Nike (2-4)
You would think adding the next Emmitt Smith would do wonders for your win-loss record. Nope! Frank’s team has only recorded two wins this season as they came out of the gates 0-3, after facing off against conference foes who all scored 116+ against him. A 1.9 point win in WK4 was offset by a 0.4 point loss in WK6, and Nike is swimming at the bottom of the standings. Also, it’s looking like another season for Kevin White, who has a luxury condo on Frank’s IR spot.

The good news is that this team could heat up at any moment. DeAndre Hopkins, Amari Cooper, and Jimmy Graham are still top tier targets talent-wise, and DeVante Parker was looking strong for the first few weeks. The out-of-the-backfield pass catching prowess of Tevin Coleman is a nice complement to Ezekiel Elliot, and Athena Nike could be a steady quarterback — can a mysteriously declining Aaron Rodgers take over for #2 ranked QB, Ben Roethlisberger? — from righting the ship this season.

Mid-Season 2016: Spunky Misunderstood Geniuses

The second of our division looks... The best team in CTDB resides in SMG land this year and so does the worst team. Let’s find out who is which. No spoilers! [IDK Mid-Season]

Fat Jubas (5-1)
Were it not for a recent WK6 loss, Eric’s team would be undefeated and laughing hard at all the other teams around them. Instead, they’ll just have to settle for having the best fantasy player in the land, sophomore running back — and last season’s playoff hero — David Johnson. While some breakout players are just a flash in the pan, Johnson has just put up back-to-back 30+ games and there’s no question he’s here to stay. When will he get a proper nickname though?

One man does not a team make though, and Jubas is getting a solid season from last year’s disappointment, CJ Anderson. His teammate, Emmanuel Sanders has had some huge games too, and he joins Mike Evans and Alshon Jeffery as a solid receiving corps. In fact, this whole team is solid, from starting lineup to bench, as there’s LeGarrette Blount for touchdowns, Sammie Coates to drop/catch deep balls, and Terrance West and James White to add further backfield depth. With a hot Andy Dalton taking over for Carson Palmer, Jubas should feel great about their chances for another Super Bowl appearance after last year’s runner-up finish.

Battle Angel (4-2)
Seems like Vu loves to play close games! Aside from a WK1 and WK6 blowout, all four other games this season have been decided by less than double digits, with both of Angel’s losses coming by around four points. With a little luck, this team could have been undefeated. Clearly, the preseason trade down from their high draft pick has resulted in wins as Jarvis Landry and Kelvin Benjamin have both settled in as low end WR1s. That’s perfectly fine because the Drew Brees to TY Hilton connection has been marvelous and responsible for 32.3 and 15.4 ppg, respectively. This 2-11 2015 squad has already doubled their win total from last year!

And don’t look now but running back Christine Michael has finally emerged from fantasy sleeper land to post 24.1 / 17.5 / 21.8 points over his last three games. If Jay Ajayi can build off his huge WK6, Battle Angel could move away from a four receiver set, but for now it’s an open air attack. There’s also some nice young receivers waiting in the wings — Will Fuller, Stefon Diggs, Travis Benjamin — even if none of them have been overly consistent so far. Also, should anyone ever draft a Lions rookie running back again? Ameer Abdullah is on IR again...

Philadelphia Phreaks (3-3)
Much like Dracula, the Phreaks find their power at home, as they are 3-1 on their field, and despite a negative PF/PA rating, are batting 0.500. Our hearts go out to another lost season of Keenan Allen, who looked so good for about fifteen minutes. Without him, the receiver corps has been a little unsteady as Brandin Cooks and Allen Robinson have been kind of boom-bust, but maybe recent free agent pickup Cameron Meredith will help fill that void — since Sterling Shepard has cooled off.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota had a rough first month but has tossed six TDs in his last two games and could have found his groove. Behind him, the running game looks okay, with Devonta Freeman time sharing to top eight RB success, and maybe Spencer Ware can add some consistency to his two huge weeks. We’ll see what happens to the run game when Doug Martin returns to action next week. For now, the Phreaks remain a bit of a mystery, as they can’t get all their pieces firing at once, and haven’t put up 100+ points since the opening week of the season.

Gang Green (2-4)
Our defending division champs are having a rough go of it. On top of a tough schedule, they’re sorely under talented. Well, that’s not true, but this brew of new and old could be working better with more depth. For example, Derek Carr is the #6 QB (but he’s been on the bench behind Blake Bortles until last week), Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Crabtree are the #7 and #11 ranked receivers, and Lamar Miller is a top ten running back. Plus kicker Dustin Hopkins and Broncos defense are both top notch.

However, after all that top ten or better goodness is Mark Ingram and Brandon Marshall, who are ranked in the low-twenties for their positional rankings. So there’s a bit drop off in depth there. We gave Gang Green an “A” grade in their draft, and Carr and Crabtree have obviously worked out, but rookie Derrick Henry can’t get going, and Allen Hurns has topped double digits just once. The entire team seems to be trending downwards and Greg will need to find some emerald magic as the schedule is about to get much much tougher in the next month.

Fobsters (0-6)
There was once a time when Fobsters went winless for the entire season. Will Jimmy’s team repeat that inglorious honor from 2006? I mean, it doesn’t help when the entire team has only put up 100+ points once, and is facing the toughest schedule in the league, with a PA of 120.9 points against them. And in all fairness, this team has been decimated by injury, as they’ve cycled through seventeen players started already. Seventeen!

The heavily injured so far: rookie gem Corey Coleman, Dez Bryant, the since cut Eric Decker. Plus a smattering of other nicks from other guys. The run game has been quite good though, as Carlos Hyde and Melvin Gordon soak up touches and pound in touchdowns, even as they don't get much yardage. Shout out to the tubby corpse of Eddie Lacy, who can’t get past double digit points this year.

At least Jordy Nelson and Marcellus Bennett have been decent, and maybe Mike Wallace or Anquan Boldin can continue to barely hold the fort until Bryant’s return. The big hope for Fobsters NOT going winless is that Tom Terrific has returned, and he’s here to slay, with 39.7 and 37.0 points in his two games back. If Fobsters can catch some scheduling luck, they should be a top contender for the Toilet Bowl, since that’s exactly where they’re headed after this horrific start.

Draft Review 2016

Right on time with our 2016 draft review this year! Another huge shakeup pre-draft, and it seems like everyone had a pretty decent draft, with no (really) bad grades! [2015 Draft Review]

1. Battle Angel (2-11)
For the second consecutive year, Battle Angel had the first slot in the draft order. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean they selected first overall, due to their inability to succeed in the Toilet Bowl. That means without a shot at Ezekiel Elliot, Vu was still in the market for running backs, as last year’s draft yielded a lot of options, but virtually all of them underperformed (Joseph Randle, Ameer Abdullah, CJ Spiller, Chris Johnson). The only keeper ended up being rookie Abdullah, who was kept more for his upside potential than actual production.

The good news is that a mega pre-draft trade yielded Kelvin Benjamin and Jarvis Landry, who are both capable of being top receivers. So along with TY Hilton, Battle Angel will once again lead with Drew Brees and an air attack. Without a first round pick, Vu decided to open up in RD2 with Jeremy Hill, and followed that up with rookie Devontae Booker in RD3 and then Jay Ajayi in RD5. That’s not a top flight backfield but it has promise. And Vu built upon a strength by getting Stefon Diggs, Travis Benjamin, rookie Laquon Treadwell, and Will Fuller to further bolster the passing game. And with an extra fourth rounder, Vu might be spelling out Brees’ last days as an Angel by taking Marcus Mariota.
Grade: B. Hill is a nice RD2 get, and we don’t see many better options that Battle Angel could have taken at pick 1.3 so the trade down was nice. We do think this has the potential to be a stellar receiving corps though!

2. Fobsters (4-9)
One year after going 5-8 yet hitting the Super Bowl, Jimmy’s team lost a win and ended up in the bottom of the league, but still came up second best in the Toilet Bowl. So what now? Well, the four game Tom Brady suspension is about to kick off and that’s a bummer. But stand-in, and las round draft pick, Tyrod Taylor should be able to hold the fort for a month.

The receiving corps should be back to above average with Dez Bryant, Nelson’s return, and new additions Eric Decker, rookie Corey Coleman, Torrey Smith, and Malcolm Mitchell. We especially love Coleman, who may take awhile to develop but could be sensational when he does. Plus, Jimmy added two upside running backs in Carlos Hyde and Melvin Gordon to go along with Eddie Lacy and TJ Yeldon. While Hyde, Gordon, and Yeldon are mostly unproven, at least they’re big swings for fences.
Grade: B+. I gave Jimmy a B+ but an opposing owner gave Fobsters a sterling “A+" grade due to “high value, high productivity, and likely productivity on the majority of his picks!” I don’t know if Fobsters hired a PR team or something but that’s the kind of reviews every fan base loves!

3. Tiiiite End Jammers (4-8-1)
I guess there’s a reason no team has gone back-to-back hunh? Lei’s team crushed 2015 with an incredible season but then slid all the way to a losing record and way out of playoff contention. What the hell happened? Entropy I guess? LeVeon Bell was suspended and then lost for the rest season due to injury. Plus, DeMarco Murray underwhelmed in Philly. But Russell Wilson was still the number three ranked quarterback, while Antonio Brown, Demaryius Thomas, and Jeremy Maclin were all pretty good — with Brown being the top ranked receiver overall. I guess all that still wasn’t enough to even sniff a repeat.

For this year’s keeper core, Wilson has been ditched (for Maclin), and Lei nabbed Andrew Luck with his first round pick, #4 overall. With another suspension for Bell, one of Matt Jones, Jonathan Stewart, or DeAngelo Williams could be called up for early action. And if Jammers want to run-and-shoot early, they could slot in new additions Tavon Austin, DeSean Jackson, Sammie Coates, or Kamar Aiken. That sounds like quality depth to me.

Honestly, Jammers still has the roster to take a title, and perhaps with Luck leading the way and a bounce back year from the running backs, this could be a two out of three championship run for Lei?
Grade: B. We love the Luck for Wilson trade-off, and while we’re not sold on the ex-Carolina running duo, we do like the deep threats Jammers added.

4. Buffy (6-6-1)
Last year, Roger kept Seattle defense as a keeper. How’d that work out? Just about average I guess. Seattle defense ranked fifth overall and put up 7.4 ppg, but that’s only 1.6 more than the tenth ranked defense. Maybe that just speaks to how weak Buffy’s keeper core was heading into 2015.

Well, weak keepers no more as our Toilet Bowl VI winner pulled off a huge trade pre-draft and moved down from the number one overall spot to nab a handful of new keepers plus tons of extra picks. Out the door is everyone from 2015’s keeper list, except for AJ Green. Welcome Cam Newton, Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, and Thomas Rawls. The keeper demise of Matt Forte and Arian Foster finally happened — although Roger scooped Forte and Foster right back up in the first and sixth rounds, respectively.

So what did the trade down net Roger in the draft? With 1.3 and 1.7, he selected Russell Wilson and Doug Baldwin. With his extra second-rounder, hernabbed Jordan Reed. While those three, plus Gronkowski and Rawls, is quite a haul for Ezekiel Elliot, we’re not sold on the Wilson pick. I mean, Buffy already had Killer Cam, the top ranked quarterback last season. Why go and grab Wilson too? And this, coming from an owner who has long eschewed keeping a QB at all. Curious decision.

The rest of Roger’s draft produced Seattle defense in RD3, Frank Gore, and Greg Olsen — another redraft from last season.
Grade: C-. We love the mega trade for keeper and quantity value, but we hate the Wilson pick up. Especially in light of how many quality quarterbacks were left near the end of the draft.

5. Philadelphia Phreaks (8-5)
2015’s division winners won an extra game last season but couldn’t repeat as the Spunky Misunderstood Geniuses champ. Still, it was a good year as Phreaks was the highest scoring team in SMG and also unearthed some quality new talent. With the sudden retirement of Marshawn Lynch, Ping needed the nice seasons from Devonta Freeman and Doug Martin, who are the new backfield for the franchise.

The return of receiver Keenan Allen could be huge too, and he’ll pair with breakthrough talent Allen Robinson to form a dynamic duo. Plus Brandin Cooks looks set to emerge as a star too. All this and not one Eagle in sight! Well, on the keeper roster at least. Ping did grab Ryan Mathews, Sam Bradford, Zach Ertz, and Eagles DST to keep it Eagle-y during the draft.

The sad news is that first round running back Dion Lewis is already on the PUP list and out of action. But Mathews and the newly promoted Spencer Ware should be solid backups, if not starters soon. And nobody has a bad word to say about Danny Woodhead, that pass catching wonderback who’s always useful in a pinch. Also, the Giants connection of Eli Manning and rookie Sterling Shepard could outperform all the Eagles, which would be a crisis for Ping’s NFC East team, but good for his fantasy squad.
Grade: A-. We can’t take points off for Lewis’ injury since it happened after he was draft, and we like the production upside of everyone drafted.

6. Gang Green (9-4)
Back-to-back playoff seasons and a shiny SMG division title after four straight seasons in the Toilet Bowl means these Greenies are back on top! It’s been a long time since Greg’s 2009 Super Bowl showing but it looks like his squad if finally trending back up.

Sure, Peyton Manning retired, but Manning was awful last season anyway. New keeper Blake Bortles was the fourth ranked quarterback last season, and Lamar Miller and Mark Ingram were stellar throughout. While neither are flashy names, Miller was the fifth ranked running back last season, and Ingram would have been top ten had not missed the tail end of the season. Add in Brandon Marshall and the venerable Larry Fitzgerald, and we have another pair of top ten talents. This whole team is suddenly stocked with talent!

The draft added rookie Derrick Henry, a monster in the backfield, and also Rashad Jennings, who’s still halfway riding last year’s hype train. And receiver Allen Hurns seems like a steal in the second round, after flashing double digit touchdowns last season. It’s likely later round picks Davante Adams and Delanie Walker won’t even see the field with this much receiving talent ahead of them. Plus there’s also the May-December Oakland connection of Derek Carr and Michael Crabtree that could pay dividends too.
Grade: A. Speaking totally unbiased, we like this draft a lot. We foresee another playoff appearance.

7. Athena Nike (9-4)
After going 5-8 and advertising his “building for the future” mentality, Frank had the tables flipped on him as his rebuilding team was the second highest scoring unit in the league last year and chased Chunky Monkeys till the finish line for the Inscrutable Drama Kings title. Despite getting upended in the first round, 2015 still has to count as a huge win for Athena Nike.

And 2015’s pre-draft trades turned up all aces for GM Frank as well, with DeAndre Hopkins and Rob Gronkowski getting acquired of the low prices of a RD2 and RD3 respectively. They ended up being the fourth and tenth best ranked WR/TE. I’d say those were great trades. And then, heading into the 2016 draft, Frank made another huge move, going all-in for Ezekiel Elliot. That move shores up Nike’s biggest hole, as they suffered through a combination of running backs last year that provided little to no consistency.

But oh what a receiving corps for Aaron Rodgers to throw to! Aside from Hopkins and Gronk, Jarvis Landry turned out to be a quality find, and rookie Amari Cooper is destined to be a true franchise receiver. Add in the superb last month by fellow rookie DeVante Parker and Nike was chockfull of young receiver talent, enabling them to sell extra keepers — farewell Gronk, Landry, and Kelvin Benjamin — for 2016’s number one overall pick. Did we mention that Frank also sat on Kevin White all year, and then kept him in what now seems to be a prescient move?

The actual 2016 draft itself was almost an afterthought after the pre-draft fireworks. Nike added Jeremy Langford, Tevin Coleman, and Chris Ivory as possible running mates for Elliot, but it’s more likely Frank goes run-and-shoot with Hopkins, Cooper, White and new pickups Michael Thomas or Brashad Perriman.
Grade: A++. That’s not for the draft, which was middling at best. But going from 1.7 to 1.1 to grab the highest touted running back rookie in years? That’s fantasy gold. Also, an extra “+" for shaking up the league on the trading front.

8. Chunky Monkeys (10-3)
After long being a dominant force in CTDB, has Monkeys’ time to dominant finally passed? Jamaal Charles isn’t starting in WK1 due to injury, and there’s no real timetable for his return. Calvin Johnson retired. Randall Cobb is returning from season ending injury. Last year’s trade of a RD3 for keeper Justin Forsett netted Evan one month of good games until Forsett went down to season ending injury.

The running game is in bad shape here, which isn’t normal for this team. Latavius Murray is a grinder and he’ll be the lead back this season, unless Giovani Bernard, Charles Sims, or Isaiah Crowell have something to say about it. Bernard still flashes potential but has lost his shine as a possible franchise back.

At least the receiving corps is still good, with all-world Julio Jones, emergent John Brown, and Cobb on the mend. Add-ins Donte Moncrief, Marvin Jones, and Terrelle Pryor should add plenty of quality targets of Philip Rivers to once again throw to.

And let’s not forget the big picture, as the last five years have yielded two titles, two additional division championship showings, and still outscored everyone by a wide margin last season on the way to the best record in the league. So maybe we’re just hoping this is the decline of the Monkey?
Grade: C. Smells like a bunch of retreads to us, unless Marvin Jones emerges as the new Megatron, this draft doesn’t have much upside.

9. Fat Jubas (5-8)
Better luck than good, amiright? Our 2012 champs hit the Toilet Bowl in 2014 before sneaking into the playoffs last year with a losing record. But then they tore through the playoffs before losing to another upstart team in the title match. A lot of that late season success can be attributed to rookie David Johnson, who had a wild last month of the season, punctuated by 42.9 points in the division title game. Johnson is the lone new keeper on this team, joining holdovers CJ Anderson, Alshon Jeffery, Mike Evans, and Emmanuel Sanders.

Anderson was a huge disappointment in his sophomore campaign, but he’ll get another crack at proving his worth. And if Jeffery can return to health, this will still be an effective receiving corps. Eric took an upside gamble on Josh Gordon in RD3, and also added Michael Floyd and Devin Funchess early — plus rookie Tajae Sharpe late.

If Anderson can’t find his 2014 form, he’ll be replaced by Duke Johnson or LeGarrette Blount, neither of whom are bellcow backs but useful in spot situations. The most important part of the backfield is David Johnson though, and Jubas is hoping he’s not this year’s version of CJ Anderson… At quarterback, Eric went late and took Carson Palmer and Jimmy Garopollo in the seventh and ninth rounds, respectively, which is once again a gamble on health, meaning Palmer.
Draft: B-. We like the re-roll on Duke Johnson, plus the new receivers who all look interesting.

10. Dirty Birds (7-6)
Trading away Rob Gronkowski and cutting Larry Fitzgerald pre-2015’s draft was a disaster for GM Jon but with the addition of last year’s top overall pick Todd Gurley, the season still ended in a Super Bowl title — despite starting off 1-5. And now the Birds are back for a shot at a repeat, and a record-breaking fourth title. But to do that, they’ll need everything to go right again.

Gurley and Adrian Peterson are the best running back duo in the league, and McCoy is more than serviceable as a third back or injury replacement. The Birds didn’t even look at another running back in the draft, showing supreme confidence in his trio. Could this hurt them when the season gets underway?

Instead, Jon focused his draft on all receivers, going Golden Tate, Jordan Matthews, Tyler Lockett, rookie Josh Doctson, and Willie Snead from RD1-5. Waiting until the sixth round for a quarterback yielded Andy Dalton, who had a blistering fantasy regular season last year before falling to injury. Sophomore Jameis Winston was also added, and then Kirk Cousins, last year’s Super Bowl (and playoffs) hero, was drafted with the last overall pick when Jon realized he was just dangling out there.
Draft: C. Rolling the dice on all receivers, and then three quarterbacks seems to fit team need, but isn’t exactly thrilling.

The New Number One!

We haven't had a three way trade since 2010's mega doozy, and we haven't had a trade for the #1 overall pick in a draft since, maybe forever? Well, GM Frank of Athena Nike had been talking about Ezekiel Elliot since the beginning of the summer -- and technically tried to draft him last year -- and we were pretty sure he was just Danny Ainge-ing us, with no actual trade in sight. Well, lo and behold, with the clock ticking, Frank pulled off a stunner that may have shifted the CTDB landscape!

Let's take a look at how this deal shakes out for each team, and try to divine where they stand heading into the 2016 draft.

Trade ID#12:

  • Athena Nike receive Buffy 2016 RD1 and 2016 RD3, and Battle Angel 2017 RD2
  • Buffy receives Rob Gronkowski, Thomas Rawls, Athena Nike 2016 RD1 and RD2, and Battle Angel 2016 RD1
  • Battle Angels receive Kelvin Benjamin, Jarvis Landry, Athena Nike 2016 RD4, Buffy 2016 RD5

Battle Angels: For giving up the #3 overall in this year's draft, along with next year's RD2, last season's 2-11 (worst place) team receives Kelvin Benjamin and Jarvis Landry to bolster their keeper core. Both should be an improvement on alternate keeper selections Golden Tate or Josh Reed. Heading into Drew Brees' last few years, Battle Angel needs to bolster their passing attack quickly to return to playoff contention. Angels also add additional RD4 and RD5 picks in this year's draft, but those feel like more of a toss in to complete draft selections.

Buffy: What a haul for the #1 overall pick! Roger wasn't thinking about dealing away a surefire top running back in Elliot but the offer on the table was just too big to refuse. It was easy for the fan base to go from "Oh man, we're losing Ezekiel!?!" to "Let Gronk Gronk!" By trading down, Buffy picks up the #3 and #7 selections overall, plus an extra RD2 (#17 overall) -- albeit giving up a RD3 in the process. In addition, Buffy bolsters their keeper core by receiving Rob Gronkowski and Thomas Rawls, Marshawn Lynch's heir apparent in Seattle. Getting Gronk alone could make up the difference between #1 and #3 overall, as Gronkowski was a top ten WR/TE last season. After last year's 6-6-1 campaign and a Toilet Bowl win, Roger is fully restocked and ready to head back to the real Bowl this season.

Athena Nike: What does it take to get the rookie running back of your dreams? A hell of a lot apparently! Three picks and four keeper-worthy players later, Frank emerges with 2016's #1 overall pick, Ezekiel Elliot. Was it worth it? Well, we won't be able to tell until Elliot hits the field, but from what all the pundits say, Elliot is the perfect rookie in the perfect situation. We need to step back and look at the bigger picture here, as Frank had an excess of young receivers that he couldn't keep. With roster locks DeAndre Hopkins and Amari Cooper joining Aaron Rodgers, there was only room for two of Rob Gronkowski, Jarvis Landry, Kelvin Benjamin, DeVante Parker, and Kevin White. Well, we know what happened next as Gronk, Landry, and Benjamin were dealt, with Parker and White's potential joining Nike's new lineup.

Time will tell who "wins" this trade, but we're pretty certain CTDB already won just for having another mega-three way deal go down. Thanks for the fireworks gentleman, and good luck in the upcoming season!
