Trent Green. Duce Staley. Mike Anderson. Those immortal names may never ring in the halls of Canton but they will go down in history. In it's inaguaral season, Green Team GM Greg Ng took those three players as it's first three picks in last year's draft. All three came out and imploded on the field. Not exploded. Imploded. With a core of hapless "super" stars, the Green Team was in a jam. The season looked like a wash and the reputation of the Jolly Green's were on the line.
Fast forward to this season. With a 3-2 record and a high scoring offense, Green Team has silenced the critics by sitting pretty atop it's division almost half way through the regular season. Who could of predicted this? While the Green Team isn't quite a dominant force yet, it is still a minor medical miracle to see it sitting atop the standings. Admist the rubble of a ruined season, Green Team mananged to pluck quite a few quality gems last year to set the stage for this season's resurgence.
A trade for top QB Brett Favre set things in motion, solidifying the leadership role on the team. Then the great WR core of Troy Brown, Marty Booker and Darrell Jackson was assembled. All three are no-namers but have big games. Add in Hines Ward this year and the Greenies have one of the strongest receiving corps in the league. Of course, the backfield is still a bit of a mess but there is hope there. Young Jamel White and Kevan Barlow have the look of stars. Current starters Duce Staley and Travis Henry are just treading water but that may be enough for the Green's to keep on winning, all the way to the playoffs and beyond.
In a recent close circuit interview, GM Ng was caught sniffing a cigar and had a pin on that declared him as the "Waiver Wire Wizard." This was followed by some small print reading "Nobody Beats the Wiz!!!" If the Greenies can win this division, this will go down as one of the greatest team turnarounds in league history. (A seemingly hollow statement since we're only in Season 2....but hey.....)
